Lancaster's descendants: Princ - Genealogy.com (2024)

By Virginia Treacy July 17, 2002 at 05:43:17

I have taken the following information from "Princess Anne County: Land and Probate Records Abstracted from Deed Books One to Seven 1691-1755"; “"Princess Anne County: Land and Probate Records Abstracted from Deed Books Eight to Eighteen 1755-1783”, by Anne E. Maling. Any references from the second book are refered to as(II).The LOVETT genealogy outlined below is based on my own work. Any mistakes are my responsibility. I appreciate any clarifications.

I have outlined the LOVETT family of Princess Anne County, VA (formally Lower Norfolk County) based on will and deed abstracts from the source sited above. Using the internet,I have done my best to research any uncertainties. However, there still may be mistakes. I have provided the abstracts themselves so people have the actual “evidence” in hand, instead of simply taking my word for it. Furthermore, someone may find a family link in the names of the executors and witnesses provided in the abstract.

This “posting” is about thirteen pages long. In order to help the reader throught the family lines, here is a list to the order of the names. An asterisk * means that the person had issue and the name continues further along.

Sincerely,
Virginia Treacy-Thomas

LOVETTS of PRINCESS ANNE CO., VA:
Lancaster LOVETT (I)
Married twice: (1) Bathsheba UKN.; and (2) Ann(e) UKN.

Lancaster’s wife Ann’ssurname (maiden name) has been given as both JOHNSON and KEMP, but these seem to be inaccurate. After Lancaster’s death (late 1672/early 1673), Ann married James KEMP, and then Jacob JOHNSON. The following will abstracts support my conclusion. When examined all together, there is a pattern of names(James Kemp, Ann’s husband; Jacob Johnson, Ann’s last husband; Ann Johnson, originally wife of Lancaster Lovett):
(pg. 26), “ 1DB481 30 Dec 1706/5 Nov 1707: James KEMP - eldest son George, son James, son-in-law Thomas WISHARD and Mary his wife, wife Ann. Ex: wife and son George. Wit: John THRUSTON, Ben ROBERTS, Richard CORBITT.”
(pg. 29), “ 2DB36 27 May 1710/5 Jul 1710: Jacob JOHNSON - grandsons William and Jacob sons of Jacob JOHNSON, Grandson John WISHARD son of James WISHARD, Granddaughter Mary WISHARD daughter of James and Mary WISHARD, Granddaughter Jacomin WISHARD, granddaughter Elizabeth WISHARD, son-in-law James WISHARD, son Jacob JOHNSON, wife Ann. Ex: son Jacob. Wit: Charles _____, John KEMP, C. co*ckE.”
(pg. 35), “ 3DB118 14 Jul 1716/1 Aug 1716: Ann JOHNSON - son Randolph LOVIT, sons George and James KEMP, son-in-law Thomas WISHARD. Wit: C. co*ckE, William WISHARD.”

Although this next quote isn’t relevant to the Lovett family, it sheds light on the connection of the WISHARD family to the JOHNSON family mentioned in the wills:
(pg. 17), “ 1DB276 7 Mar 1700: Jacob JOHNSON deed of gift to daughter Mary wife of James WISHARD...” .

Lancaster Lovett is said to have been 52 years old in 1661. That would place his birthdate at approximately 1609. His will is dated 17 Oct., 1672; proved 15 April, 1673 (“of Linhaven in Lower Norfolk County” , VA). He names his sons Lancaster, John (abbreviated “Jno.”),Thomas, and Randolph; daughters Mary & Elizabeth Lovett, and daughter Bethsheba “now wife to John Ladd ”. He names his wife as Ann Lovett.

(I) Lancaster Lovett (d. 1672-73) md. Bethsheba UKN.; Ann UKN.

1. Bethsheba md. John LADD
2. *Lancaster md. Mary CARRAWAY (CARROWAY)
3. John (dead by 1691; no issue)

(8. Frances KEELING b. 24 Aug. 1766)

(p.35; II) “ 10 DB216 31 Aug 1766: Thomas KEELING - sons Adam, Henry, Thomas and John; wife Betty, seven children. Ex: wife. Wit: Jacob KEELING, Sarah KEELING.”

I’ve added the following because the wording. “Mrs.” means that “Elizabeth LOVETT” was formally married to a LOVETT. Did Thomas KEELING really marry a LOVETT, or a widow of a LOVETT??
From “Virginia Marriage Records; Princess Anne County Marriage Bonds”, by Edward W. James (p.523),“August 27th, 1751: Thomas Keeling with Mrs. Elizabeth Lovett. Teste. Thomas Keeling, Anthony Lawson, George Weblin.”
