Recipe Variations

Substitutions:

You can use fresh or frozen cranberries. Keep in mind that frozen cranberries add to overall cooking time.

We’ve seen versions that substitute brandy for Port wine or Grand Marnier. Use Port wine for a lighter CrockPot Mulled Wine and brandy or Grand Marnier for a higher-ABV wine co*cktail. Grand Marnier is a fantastic option for infusing more citrus flavor into your beverage.

Any orangey citrus fruit works, so use what you like! Blood oranges and clementines are solid options if you want to use a different type of orange.

Vegetarian + Vegan Option: This wine co*cktail recipe is 100 percent vegetarian and vegan! Check that your alcohol ingredients do not contain animal by-products, as some manufacturers process them with animal-derived ingredients.

Gluten-Free: This recipe should also be gluten-free, as none of its components typically contain gluten.

Alcohol-Free Option: Swap the Merlot and brandy with zero-proof alternatives for NA CrockPot Mulled Wine.

Smaller Serving Size + Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe makes eight servings. Scale it up or down to your desired yield, keeping in mind that you may need to work in batches if you scale up.

If you are making big batches make sure you have space to store all of the mulled wine.

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 15 grams of sugar per serving. Use sugar-free orange juice and white sugar substitutes to make it sugar-free.

How do you keep mulled wine warm at a party? ›

Serving a party? Keep the mulled wine nice and warm by placing it in a slow cooker on “warm.” If the wine will be out for more than two hours, I recommend removing the whole spices so that they don't make the wine bitter.

Why does my mulled wine taste bad? ›

You need to infuse the wine long enough with the spices to take on their flavour but DON'T ON ANY ACCOUNT LET THE MIXTURE BOIL as you'll be left with a bitter taste. Slow and low is the way to go. And it shouldn't be served piping hot, just comfortably - and comfortingly - warm.

What temp should you heat mulled wine? ›

Mulled wine evaporates at 80 °C, so make sure to keep it below this temperature. We recommend heating and serving it at around 65 °C, using a Thermapen kitchen thermometer to monitor the temperature. Serve your festive drink in warmed glass mugs to help the wine maintain its optimal serving temperature whilst drinking.

What is the best way to heat mulled wine? ›

Simmer. Cook the mulled wine on medium-high heat until it just barely reaches a simmer. (Avoid letting it bubble — you don't want to boil off the alcohol.) Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.

Do you cook the alcohol out of mulled wine? ›

Does the alcohol cook out when making mulled wine? In short, yes, some of the alcohol burns off when boiling mulled wine, but you should only be gently bringing up to the boil and simmering for around 15-30 minutes which isn't enough time to completely remove all alcohol traces.

Ainsley Harriott recommends mulling wines in a slow cooker and says two hours at low temperature gives excellent results and should retain most alcohol content.

How do you pimp up shop bought mulled wine? ›

Gently melt some chocolate together with orange, mulled wine spices, a touch of sugar and some cocoa powder. Add your Christkindl mulled wine along with a splash of Cointreau and you're in for a boozy treat.

What is a good substitute for brandy in mulled wine? ›

Similar like Sangria, it's also traditional to spike your mulled wine with an extra bit of liquor. Brandy is the traditional choice but you can substitute it with rum or bourbon or even equal quantity of apple juice.

What is the best wine to use to make mulled wine? ›

The best red wine to use for mulled wine is Merlot, Zinfandel or Garnacha (also called Grenache). These wines are dark, fruity and full bodied, which means they can support all of the flavors we'll be adding. Look for labels that describe the wine as “jammy” or with “notes of vanilla.”

What type of red wine should I use for mulled wine? ›

The best red wines for mulled wines taste bright and fresh, such as Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, fruit-forward Pinot Noir. Inexpensive Bordeaux is another great choice for mulled wine; in fact, claret was a traditional choice for British mulled wine in William Shakespeare's day.

Can you use cheap wine for mulled wine? ›

Just like with the best wines for sangria, the wines you choose for mulled wine don't need to be fancy (you'll be adding other ingredients to it anyway so there's no need to break the bank on an expensive bottle).

What happens if you let mulled wine boil? ›

Don't Overheat the Wine

Simmer the wine instead, and never boil it, as sugars will caramelize. Plus, alcohol burns off as it's heated, so don't “cook” the wine. When overheated, wine can taste raisin-like or syrupy, cancelling out the original fruity flavors that enhance spices and sweeteners.

Why shouldn't you boil mulled wine? ›

Unfortunately, you can't get there without burning the wine badly. To get even close to zero alcohol, you have to boil for so long that the sugars will caramelize and start to burn and blacken, while the tannins that flavor the wine will have broken down completely, creating strong negative flavors of turned wine.

What happens if I boil mulled wine? ›

What happens if wine ferments too hot? ›

Fermentations that are too warm can perform poorly as well. And in extreme cases--85 degrees and above--the wine yeast cells may become damaged, inhibiting their ability to ferment. It is also important to note here that fermentations that are too warm are more hospitable to the growth of unwanted micro-organisms.
