My 5-ingredient beer bread is soft on the inside, slightly sweet, and has an irresistible buttery, crunchy top. Trust me, you’ll want to make it on repeat!Best Beer for Beer Bread + Easy 5-Ingredient Recipe - Plain Everything (1)

If you’ve been around here long, you know I’m not a huge fan of baking. Working with flour and dough is not my favorite thing, so a one-bowl recipe like this 5-ingredient beer bread is always a winner!

This is a pretty classic recipe and only uses five ingredients, that most of us already have in our pantry. You can literally it in the oven in less than 10 minutes! If the thought of making homemade bread is intimidating, this is the recipe for you!

When it comes to choosing the beer, most people will say to just use what you like. I don’t agree. A hoppy beer will result in an extremely bitter loaf of bread. That said, you do want the flavor of the beer to come through, so choosing something too light won’t add much flavor either. I prefer brown ale, lager, and even some porters. You could have some fun and try a pumpkin beer, cider, or something a little sweeter.

Choosing the best beer for beer bread

One of my favorite beers to use is Yuengling Lager. It’s a medium-bodied lager with notes of caramel malt and a sweetness that makes it perfect for beer bread.

Did you know that Yuengling is America’s oldest operating brewery in the United States? They’ve been brewing beer in Pottsville, PA for 90 years!

Since 1829, D.G. Yuengling & Son n has been a family-owned and operated business. Currently operated by its sixth generation, sisters Jen, Wendy, Debbie, and Sheryl Yuengling work alongside their dad to carry on the family tradition. In a male-dominated industry, these four women are leading the company with over 60 years of combined brewery experience, which makes me love it even more!

For 189 years, the iconic eagle image has adorned the label, representing the original “Eagle Brewery”. To celebrate a major milestone and their 190th anniversary, Yuengling is debuting limited edition commemorative lager cans. Between January 2018 and April 2019, a new design will be released each month, so make sure you collect all five before they’re all gone!

Recently, Yuengling added a new beer to its family, Yingling Golden Pilsner. It was born from six generations of brewing expertise and is the first year-round beer to debut in 17 years. It’s golden in both name and color and the perfect balance of hop and malt for a crisp and smooth beverage.

So let’s whip up some beer bread in honor of this incredible company and the four women who now run the show! First, you’ll need some Yuengling Lager. You can find it at a local retailer or liquor store. I picked mine up at Kroger!

How to make beer bread:

  • Choose the right beer. Nothing too hoppy. Brown ale, lagers, and porters are all good.
  • Let the beer come to room temperature, or close to it.
  • Sifting the flour is a must. The bread will be lighter and fluffier.
  • Once you add the beer to the dry ingredients, stir until just combined.
  • Don’t skip the butter on top. It’s what gives the bread an irresistible crust.
  • Rotate the pan halfway through cooking for even browning.
  • If the top starts to get too brown, tent it with parchment paper or foil.
  • Be patient. Let the bread rest for at least 30 minutes before cutting.

This is a hearty bread with a thick buttery and crunchy top.

It’s delicious served with chili, soup, and makes a great substitute for biscuits!

Once you see how easy this is, you can start playing around with the recipe. Try adding herbs, garlic, and grated cheese for something a little more fun. Try a few poppy, caraway, or sesame seeds on top before baking. You can use up to 1/4 cup of sugar, but we like a beer bread with just a hint of sweetness that can still be used for sandwiches, toast, etc…
