A Good Year

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A Good Year is a fine example of a top-notch director and actor out of their elements, in a sappy romantic comedy lacking in charm and humor.

A Good Year | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Joe Clay Times (UK) A Good Year is a light snack of comfort-food cinema and Scott’s only comedy— not that there are a huge amount of laughs. Apr 23, 2024 Full Review A Good Year | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Namrata Joshi Outlook It's a film from which you'd expect the moon, the stars and the sun. What with an actor like Crowe and a director like Scott. Disappointingly, the talented duo gives you the most wishy-washy film of the year. Jeremy-James H An interesting film about some complex stories around love happiness and living the good life Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Daniel G I didn't know Ridley Scott had made a RomCom - which was a well-crafted movie that was also quite conventional, though the characterizations were a little more naturalistic than in some films of the same genre. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Jacob B While I certainly have no problems with directors making a film that's nothing like the rest of the films in their filmography, Ridley Scott's attempt to make something outside of his comfort zone was not one of his better efforts. Maybe it was just him licking his wounds in the aftermath of what happened with Kingdom of Heaven but his attempts to make a romantic comedy - where I found the romance to not be a major element of the film, barely taking up 1/3rd of the movie - missed the mark. Sure, the cinematography's nice, there are a few amusing jokes and Russell Crowe delivers a charming performance (yeah, I'm not one of those people who has it out for Crowe as an actor) but A Good Year is unevenly paced, has rather flat humour, is quite clichéd with Scott seemingly having no idea how to put his own spin on them and Crowe not really having a lot of chemistry with Marion Cotilliard despite neither one acting badly. Also, while the flashback scenes are some of the better moments of the film, I find it silly that Freddie Highmore would grow up to look like Russell Crowe. Yes, ability over appearance, but it still seems to me that he was cast more because of name recognition from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory rather than because he was a suitable candidate. After all, when you see him as an adult in Bates Motel and The Good Doctor, Highmore doesn't exactly come off as the spitting image of Russell Crowe in his Gladiator days, does he? I do kinda miss seeing him in movies, though. Can he and Dakota Fanning appear in a movie together one day? Remembering them from simpler times and seeing them in the same movie would make the film feel like an epic crossover for me. Oh right, I was supposed to talk about A Good Year, wasn't I? It's not remarkably awful and I certainly think this is better than Ridley Scott's unsuccessful attempts to recapture Gladiator vibes again with 2010 Robin Hood and Exodus: Gods and Kings, but man oh man, did this material not suit him at all. It's honestly one of Scott's more boring films actually. Maybe he'll suddenly decide to make another romcom after he finishes that Gladiator sequel with a better script but I can see why he's otherwise been reluctant to make anything that wasn't an epic-scale period piece, a crime drama or a science-fiction film since then. Okay, some of his later films don't quite fit those bills but I think that is the gist of it. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Jim H Watch it when it's cold outside and you are feeling a bit blue. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Shadowman4710 Yeah, critics are often full of it. This film might not be brilliant but it's often funny and is always charming. Ridley Scott's strong point is his visual style and this film is no exception to that. The actors are all very good but it's the scenery that makes the greatest impression.
