Oatmeal Health Benefits
Oats and oatmeal are one of the best foods you can choose to get those bowels moving. This is very important for babies that have just started eating solid food and when their little bowels still need to get accustomed to eating.
Regular consumption of oats (e.g. for breakfast) can get them moving throughout the day and ensure that both adults, babies and toddlers have regular bowel movements.
Oats also contain specific nutrients called beta-glucans which have amazing health benefits. One of the main ones being their ability to moderate blood sugar levels and thus minimize the risk of diabetes.
Oats are a great source of fiber which not only supports digestive health as already mentioned but also can minimize the risks of cardiovascular diseases by lowering the "bad" LDL blood cholesterol.
Oatmeal Nutrient Profile
Oatmeal is a great source of complex carbohydrates – the main macronutrient each of us needs to provide energy to our bodies.
Oats are one of the best sources of the mineral manganese as well as molybdenum, phosphorus and copper.
They are also a great source of the vitamins B1 (thiamin) and biotin.
Ways To Prepare Oats Or Oatmeal
There is a whole bunch of ways you can use oats (or oatmeal) to make delicious breakfast, lunches, snacks, dinners and desserts. Any meal really.
I almost always use tiny rolled oats for any meal I am preparing. This is because they are easily cooked (or soaked) and can also blend easily into a flour if I need them for a smoothie or (pan)cake batter.
Ideas to use oats in recipes:
- Overnight oats
- Cooked oatmeal with fruit and nut butters
- Pancakes
- Creamy smoothies
- Oatmeal cookies
